Bamboo Facts
bedek weaving BEDEK...traditional Indonesian method of weaving thin strips of bamboo-like material, about 10mm wide, together to form a herring bone pattern. This is fixed on top of a wooden board to form table or shelf tops. Pieces of bamboo are then split to form a beading around the edge.
galar weaving GALAR...pieces of split bamboo are placed side by side and bound together using rattan to form table and shelf tops, chair backs, seat bases etc. Much more widely used than bedek.
split bamboo SPLIT BAMBOO...lengths of bamboo are split using a machete or parang (traditional Indonesian knife). These can be placed on top of a wooden board in patterns to form table and shelf tops, or bound together using either rattan or cord to form galar.
